The trail winds along the curves of the Ālande River through present-day Grobiņa. Throughout the route, informative stands introduce visitors to stories from Grobiņa’s rich history. Along the way, it is possible to see the Grobiņa hillfort, ancient settlement, and burial grounds.
Grobiņa, referred to by newcomers as Seeburg (Sea Castle or Lake Castle), is the first inhabited place in Latvia mentioned in written historical sources. It was already inhabited during the Stone Age, and later — at the beginning of the 1st century AD — Grobiņa became a centre of the Western Baltic Curonian tribe. Until the 9th century, Grobiņa was a large and well-known Curonian and Viking settlement of its time.
The park and walking trail are suitable for pedestrians, cyclists, parents with strollers, and people with mobility impairments. The Ālande River Park can also be explored by boat along the river route.
