In 1560, the first wooden church in the city was located near the Grobiņa castle on Skābarža hill. Due to its poor condition, it was demolished and a new wooden church was built in 1596 in front of the Grobiņa medieval castle with bastions. Unfortunately, during the Swedish invasion in 1659, the church burned or was deliberately burned. All the church furnishings were destroyed in the fire, incl. the ornate altar. During Duke Jēkab's time, i.e. in 1660, when the duke lived in Grobiņa's medieval castle with bastions, the construction of a new stone church was started. The church was consecrated in 1664 and underwent repeated restoration in 1892.

Currently, the church can be proud of its unusual brightness and the restored, luxurious altar.
